Reference note concerning 041316
An older Hammond selection guide lists 125P23D and 041316 for the 290BEX. The current Deluxe application page instead lists 125P2A, 125P23B, 022749 and 025130. Current Hammond information also associates 041316 with the higher-current 290CX or 290CEX application family.
Reference 041316 alone is therefore insufficient for safe selection. Compare the high-voltage current, heater current, primary voltage, mounting pattern and lead colours with the original transformer.
Comparison with related Hammond models
- Hammond 290BEX
- 240 V at 50/60 Hz, 660 V CT at 138 mA, 6.3 V at 3 A and 5 V at 3 A
- Hammond 290BX
- 120 V, 60 Hz version in the same basic Deluxe application family
- Hammond 290CEX
- 240 V version for later Deluxe Reverb Reissue applications with 650 V CT, a higher high-voltage current rating and 6.3 V at 4.5 A; not electrically identical
Selection and installation notes
The specified 330-0-330 V, 6.3 V and 5 V figures are rated values under load. No-load voltages are higher. The final B+ rail also depends on the rectifier, filtering, actual mains voltage and amplifier current demand.
The 290BEX has no dedicated 230 V primary tap. Ideal proportional scaling at exactly 230 V gives approximately 316-0-316 V, 47.9 V at the bias tap, 6.04 V and 4.79 V. These are calculated estimates and must be checked under load.
Because the 6.3 V winding has no accessible centre tap, its heater reference must follow the exact schematic using an artificial centre tap, hum-balance network or existing amplifier circuit.
Mains wiring, primary fusing, protective earth, strain relief, touch protection and insulation clearances must be completed by a qualified technician. Filter capacitors can retain lethal voltages after disconnection from the mains.
Questions about selection and use
Is the Hammond 290BEX suitable for documented Deluxe and Deluxe Reverb circuits?
Yes, Hammond lists the 290BEX for compatible Deluxe and Deluxe Reverb versions and currently identifies Fender references 125P2A, 125P23B, 022749 and 025130. The mechanics, schematic and mains voltage must match.
Can the Hammond 290BEX be operated from a European 230 V mains supply?
Yes, the primary winding is nominally rated for 240 V and may be used from 230 V when the correspondingly lower secondary voltages suit the circuit. Measure the heater, bias and high-voltage rails under load.
Can the Hammond 290BEX be used as the 240 V alternative to the Hammond 290BX?
Yes, Hammond lists the 290BEX as the 240 V version in the same Deluxe application family, while the 290BX is intended for 120 V at 60 Hz. Check the connections and mounting dimensions against the specific amplifier.
