5678 subminiature pentode for miniature battery preamps
The 5678 is a fully shielded, directly heated pencil-style pentode with five flexible wire leads. Its 1.25 V, 50 mA filament allows extremely compact and economical valve preamplifiers.
Published operating points use only 45 to 67.5 V and less than 2 mA of plate current. This makes the valve attractive for miniature preamps, portable instrument electronics and unusual low-voltage audio experiments.

Miniature audio design notes
The directly heated filament benefits from a clean DC supply and must be considered in the bias arrangement. Valves intended for sensitive inputs should be selected for low noise and low microphonics.
Its high plate resistance makes the 5678 primarily a voltage-gain device. Low-impedance outputs require a following buffer, transformer or semiconductor stage.
Questions about selection and audio use
Is the 5678 suitable for a miniature valve preamplifier?
Yes, its small size, full shielding and 45 to 67.5 V operating conditions make it highly attractive for miniature preamps. A suitable anode load can provide useful voltage gain with very low power consumption.
Can the 5678 operate in a battery-powered audio project?
Yes, its filament requires only 1.25 V at 50 mA and can be supplied from a suitable cell or regulated rechargeable battery. The anode circuit additionally requires approximately 45 to 67.5 V.
Is the 5678 useful for guitar, microphone and portable preamps?
Yes, its subminiature construction supports unusually compact valve modules for instruments, effects and portable audio equipment. Valves intended for sensitive input stages should be tested for noise, hum and microphonics.

The EU Directive on the Restriction of the Use of Certain Hazardous Substances in Electrical and Electronic Equipment (2011/65/EU = "RoHS 2") aims to exclude certain hazardous substances from electrical and electronic equipment or to restrict the use of certain substances in electrical and electronic equipment. These include substances such as lead, mercury, cadmium, and chromium, as well as certain brominated flame retardants and plasticizers. These substances may only be used in electrical and electronic equipment up to a maximum concentration limit, unless exemptions in the annexes to the directive permit their use under certain conditions. This can reduce and eliminate harmful substances and improve the recycling of waste electrical and electronic equipment. To find out whether the component you purchased from us is permitted in your device, please refer to the current directive or the current law applicable to your country. If you are a manufacturer, please feel free to contact us to find out whether the component you require can be tested and approved according to the current directives. We would be happy to assist you.
