For preamps, Hi-Fi, guitar amps, studio and sensitive audio circuits
Noval, B9A, 9-Pin Miniature, chassis socket and tube shield for valves
Spring cup contacts, Ø 18 mm cut-out and 28 mm mounting centres apart
Noval B9A chassis socket with a 55 mm shield and 18 mm cut-out
This Noval B9A valve socket is designed for chassis mounting and point-to-point wiring. Its nominal 18 mm installation cut-out makes it particularly suitable for compact preamplifier stages in valve amplifiers, Hi-Fi equipment, guitar amplifiers, studio electronics and test equipment. The white ceramic body provides a dimensionally stable and temperature-resistant insulating base. Silver-plated spring cup contacts securely engage the nine valve pins, while solder lugs permit clear and accessible wiring. The removable aluminium shield contains an internal spring and supports both electromagnetic screening and secure valve retention. The socket is suitable for new equipment, repairs and restoration work.

Typical mechanically compatible valves
Preamplifier and dual triodes: ECC83 / 12AX7 / 7025, ECC82 / 12AU7 and ECC81 / 12AT7
Audio and RF triodes: ECC88 / 6DJ8, E88CC / 6922 and 6N11
A common Noval B9A base does not guarantee electrical interchangeability. Pinout, heater data and operating values must match the relevant circuit. The valve height and diameter must also be compatible with the shield.
Alternative designations
Internationally used designations for this format include Noval, B9A, 9-Pin Miniature, Miniature 9-Pin, Noval Chassis Socket, 9-Pin Chassis-Mount Tube Socket and Ceramic Tube Socket with Shield.
Installation and use of the shielded Noval socket
What chassis cut-out and mounting centres are required?
The technical drawing specifies a nominal Ø 18 mm cut-out. For practical installation, BTB recommends a chassis cut-out of Ø 18.5 to 20 mm. The mounting centres are 28 mm centre-to-centre. The socket, hole pattern and valve shield should be checked together before the chassis is machined.
What is the purpose of the valve shield?
The removable 55 mm aluminium shield contains an internal spring. It supports the screening of sensitive preamplifier valves against external electromagnetic fields and retains the valve resiliently in position. The shield must be locked onto the socket fully and without tilting.
Which valves fit mechanically?
Noval B9A valves such as ECC83 / 12AX7 / 7025, ECC82 / 12AU7, ECC81 / 12AT7, ECC88 / 6DJ8, E88CC / 6922 and 6N11 fit mechanically. A common base does not guarantee electrical interchangeability; the valve height and diameter must also be compatible with the shield.
What must be considered during installation and soldering?
The locating gap must agree with the intended pinout and installation orientation. Insert a mechanically compatible valve before final soldering so that the contacts and solder lugs can align without tension. This reduces lateral forces on the valve pins and mechanical stress at the glass base. The valve must not be energised during this procedure, and solder or flux must not enter the spring cup contacts.

The EU Directive on the Restriction of the Use of Certain Hazardous Substances in Electrical and Electronic Equipment (2011/65/EU = "RoHS 2") aims to exclude certain hazardous substances from electrical and electronic equipment or to restrict the use of certain substances in electrical and electronic equipment. These include substances such as lead, mercury, cadmium, and chromium, as well as certain brominated flame retardants and plasticizers. These substances may only be used in electrical and electronic equipment up to a maximum concentration limit, unless exemptions in the annexes to the directive permit their use under certain conditions. This can reduce and eliminate harmful substances and improve the recycling of waste electrical and electronic equipment. To find out whether the component you purchased from us is permitted in your device, please refer to the current directive or the current law applicable to your country. If you are a manufacturer, please feel free to contact us to find out whether the component you require can be tested and approved according to the current directives. We would be happy to assist you.
