JJ E34L matched octet – eight power pentodes from one run for dual-mono and big stereo amps
Eight output tubes, two channels, one demand: absolute uniformity. This E34L octet is selected as one continuous set of eight in a single measurement run on a calibrated Roetest V10 – with the E34L's higher measured transconductance this matters all the more, so both channels of a 2x100-watt amp or both monoblocks behave identically, from idle current to the clipping point.
Add the long-term view: the rugged E34L ages more slowly than an equally loaded EL34, so the set of eight stays in balance longer. Sonically the focus is on clarity, a tight foundation and generous headroom – warm, but never blurred. Burn-in: around 50 to 100 hours.
Typical applications
- Stereo and dual-mono power amplifiers with four output tubes per channel
- Monoblock pairs fitted entirely from one matching run
- Converting an EL34 set of eight to the sturdier E34L
- Demanding push-pull projects requiring maximum channel uniformity

Application and design notes
Eight tubes mean 12 A of heater current and substantial heat – size and verify power supply and ventilation accordingly, especially in racks. When converting from EL34 to E34L, set the idle current per channel for all tubes; the higher transconductance tends to raise it in cathode-biased circuits. Lethal voltages are present inside – service work requires proper qualification.
Questions about selection and use
Why should all eight tubes come from a single measurement run?
Yes, that is the crucial point: only when all eight tubes are measured against each other are both channels or both monoblocks truly congruent – from idle current to clipping. Two separately purchased quads can diverge from each other as groups.
Do eight E34Ls stay balanced over the years?
Yes, better than most alternatives: the rugged build and the reserve from the higher measured transconductance make the E34L age more slowly – the set drifts apart less over the operating hours and channel uniformity lasts longer.
Is the octet right for converting my stereo amp from EL34 to E34L?
Yes, the E34L is plug-compatible and the complete set of eight replaces the old EL34s in one go – both channels start from an identical baseline. Have the bias set per channel afterwards and the new balance is established.

The EU Directive on the Restriction of the Use of Certain Hazardous Substances in Electrical and Electronic Equipment (2011/65/EU = "RoHS 2") aims to exclude certain hazardous substances from electrical and electronic equipment or to restrict the use of certain substances in electrical and electronic equipment. These include substances such as lead, mercury, cadmium, and chromium, as well as certain brominated flame retardants and plasticizers. These substances may only be used in electrical and electronic equipment up to a maximum concentration limit, unless exemptions in the annexes to the directive permit their use under certain conditions. This can reduce and eliminate harmful substances and improve the recycling of waste electrical and electronic equipment. To find out whether the component you purchased from us is permitted in your device, please refer to the current directive or the current law applicable to your country. If you are a manufacturer, please feel free to contact us to find out whether the component you require can be tested and approved according to the current directives. We would be happy to assist you.
