JJ E34L matched sextet – six rugged power pentodes for continuous duty
Where six output tubes deliver full power night after night – in 200-watt bass and guitar stages or large parallel push-pull amplifiers – substance per tube matters as much as matching. The E34L brings both: rugged construction plus the higher transconductance verified in BTB's measurement practice on a Roetest V10, giving the set tangible reserve and a longer life under hard use.
All six tubes come from one selection run and share the current evenly across the parallel branches. The reward: plenty of headroom and a tight, clear foundation without harshness – with a tone that fully settles after around 50 to 100 hours of burn-in.
Typical applications
- 200-watt bass and guitar power stages running six tubes in continuous duty
- Parallel push-pull amplifiers with three tubes per branch
- Stage and backline amps where reliability counts
- Converting an EL34 set of six to the sturdier E34L

Application and design notes
Six output tubes generate serious heat – check ventilation and power supply reserves including the 9 A heater current. When converting from EL34 to E34L, check the idle current of all tubes after installation and adjust in fixed-bias amps; the higher transconductance tends to raise it in cathode-biased circuits. Lethal voltages are present – service work requires proper qualification.
Questions about selection and use
Can I swap my complete EL34 set of six for E34Ls?
Yes, the E34L is plug-compatible and works as a complete matched set in place of six EL34s without issue. Have the bias set after the swap – the power stage then gains extra reserve and the sturdier build.
Is the E34L worth it specifically for hard stage use?
Yes, that is exactly where it shines: rugged construction and the higher measured transconductance let the tubes run further from their limits – meaning less wear under continuous load and predictable service intervals for touring and backline.
Does the bass stay defined with six E34Ls at high volume?
Yes, the E34L's tight, firm foundation benefits big power stages in particular: the extra headroom keeps the low end clear and contoured even at high drive levels, where softer tubes already blur.

The EU Directive on the Restriction of the Use of Certain Hazardous Substances in Electrical and Electronic Equipment (2011/65/EU = "RoHS 2") aims to exclude certain hazardous substances from electrical and electronic equipment or to restrict the use of certain substances in electrical and electronic equipment. These include substances such as lead, mercury, cadmium, and chromium, as well as certain brominated flame retardants and plasticizers. These substances may only be used in electrical and electronic equipment up to a maximum concentration limit, unless exemptions in the annexes to the directive permit their use under certain conditions. This can reduce and eliminate harmful substances and improve the recycling of waste electrical and electronic equipment. To find out whether the component you purchased from us is permitted in your device, please refer to the current directive or the current law applicable to your country. If you are a manufacturer, please feel free to contact us to find out whether the component you require can be tested and approved according to the current directives. We would be happy to assist you.
