JJ EL34-II single tube – three decades of EL34 experience in one bottle
The EL34-II (also written EL34II or EL34-2) is JJ's evolution of its own EL34: manufacturing experience gathered since the 1990s went into a revised system that proves more stable, longer-lived and lower in noise in practice – without giving up the familiar, pleasant JJ character. Tonally, in our assessment, it sits not far from the legendary Mullard XF2.
It shows its strengths where tubes are worked hard: class-A circuits with high continuous dissipation, high operating voltages and ultra-linear designs. As a single tube it suits single-ended output stages, direct comparison against your existing EL34 complement, and per-piece supply for everyone who measures and pairs themselves.
Typical applications
- Single-ended and class-A output stages with one tube per channel
- Circuits with high operating voltages and ultra-linear topology
- Direct listening comparison against an existing EL34 or E34L
- Per-piece supply for in-house selection in workshops and manufacturing

Application and design notes
The EL34-II replaces EL34 and E34L plug-compatibly; a bias check belongs to every swap, with readjustment in fixed-bias amps. In hot class-A operating points, verify ventilation and power supply reserves. Tube amplifiers carry lethal voltages in operation – modifications and measurements belong in practiced hands.
Questions about selection and use
How does the EL34-II differ from the EL34 and E34L?
Yes, the lineup is clear: the EL34 is the proven standard, the E34L the rugged variant with extra headroom – and the EL34-II condenses the manufacturing experience since the 1990s into a refined generation: proven in practice to be more stable, longer-lived and lower in noise while keeping the pleasant JJ core tone.
Is the EL34-II a good choice for hot class-A circuits?
Yes, that is precisely what it was hardened for: the revised construction handles high continuous dissipation and high operating voltages with composure – qualities that translate directly into operating safety and service life in class-A and ultra-linear stages.
Can I audition a single EL34-II against my current EL34?
Yes, in single-ended circuits a single-tube comparison is the easiest way to form your own opinion of its XF2-leaning tone – check the idle current after the swap. In push-pull stages, compare set against set so that matching doesn't skew the result.

The EU Directive on the Restriction of the Use of Certain Hazardous Substances in Electrical and Electronic Equipment (2011/65/EU = "RoHS 2") aims to exclude certain hazardous substances from electrical and electronic equipment or to restrict the use of certain substances in electrical and electronic equipment. These include substances such as lead, mercury, cadmium, and chromium, as well as certain brominated flame retardants and plasticizers. These substances may only be used in electrical and electronic equipment up to a maximum concentration limit, unless exemptions in the annexes to the directive permit their use under certain conditions. This can reduce and eliminate harmful substances and improve the recycling of waste electrical and electronic equipment. To find out whether the component you purchased from us is permitted in your device, please refer to the current directive or the current law applicable to your country. If you are a manufacturer, please feel free to contact us to find out whether the component you require can be tested and approved according to the current directives. We would be happy to assist you.
