JJ EL34-II matched quad – four voltage-hardened power pentodes for demanding stereo amps
The higher the plate voltage, the more clearly output tubes separate into good and merely adequate. The EL34-II quad is built for exactly that league: JJ's revised construction carries high voltage capability as a series feature, making this set of four the first choice for stereo push-pull amplifiers that work their tubes with ambitious supply voltages, in ultra-linear configuration or at hot class-A operating points.
BTB premium matching assembles all four tubes to equal values – both channels operate symmetrically and age evenly, letting the new generation's longevity show its full worth. The tone remains unmistakably JJ: warm and musical, over the quiet background of the lower-noise construction.
Typical applications
- Stereo push-pull amplifiers with two output tubes per channel
- Power stages with high plate voltage and ultra-linear topology
- Hot-running class-A and class-AB designs
- Generation change of an EL34 or E34L quad in the same amplifier

Application and design notes
At high supply voltages, clean workmanship counts double: sockets and wiring should be in good condition, and the idle current is set for all four tubes after installation. In ultra-linear circuits the screen grid benefits directly from the EL34-II's voltage reserve. The voltages present are lethal – work on an open chassis only with proper qualification.
Questions about selection and use
Can the EL34-II quad handle power amps with high plate voltage?
Yes, high voltage capability is this generation's core feature: the revised construction shrugs off ambitious supply voltages and gives the power stage the safety reserve that makes the difference during mains peaks or load changes.
Does the quad suit ultra-linear stereo amplifiers?
Yes, ideally so: in ultra-linear circuits the screen grid sits on the transformer tap and sees large voltage swings – exactly where the EL34-II's voltage reserve pays off, while the matched set of four keeps both channels symmetrical.
Does the quad keep the familiar JJ EL34 sound?
Yes, the pleasant, warm core character of the JJ family was deliberately retained – the EL34-II adds stability, service life and quietness on top rather than reinventing the tone. If you like your amp's sound, you get it here in its most mature form.
