How long do electron tubes last?

Unfortunately, this question cannot be answered in general terms, as it depends on several factors:

• Is the amplifier Class A? Here, the load and wear are higher than with Class AB or Class B

• Is higher power often demanded from the amplifier, for example when listening loudly or using inefficient or critical loudspeakers?

• Is the amplifier frequently switched on and off? This often stresses the tubes more than longer continuous operation

• Can the tubes dissipate their heat properly, depending on the design, housing, fan and the device’s surroundings?

As a rough guide, power tubes should be replaced every 3–10 years with regular use, while preamp tubes and driver tubes should be replaced approximately every 5–20 years. Of course, the manufacturer’s specifications and the displays on the device must also be observed. We can determine this precisely by measuring the tubes.
