What does matched and/or balanced mean for tubes?

Matched means that two tubes are matched to each other in terms of their parameters, meaning they fit together. This is an important topic when used in push-pull power stages and stereo tube amplifiers; here, pairs, quartets etc. should always be bought with matching. At BTB, this is always the case with power tubes sold as pairs, quartets etc.

The term “balanced” refers to so-called double triodes such as ECC83, E88CC etc., which have two identical systems inside the glass bulb. However, since these systems are known to differ in their values, it makes sense in many stereo or multi-channel applications to use these two systems matched to each other, so that later the voice comes from the center and the spatial reproduction is correct. If you tick the “matched” option at BTB, you receive pairs or single tubes that are balanced and matched – so with two tubes, this means four systems matched to each other
