What happens when tubes are matched?

When matching tubes, a large quantity of tested electron tubes is measured according to suitable parameters, and pairs, quartets, sextets or octets are then put together. It is not possible to modify an already manufactured tube so that it matches another tube, because the values are static and only change over the course of use through wear.
