What are 211, 845 and 805, and what are power triodes used for?

211, 845 and 805 are 10 V directly heated power triodes with a 4-pin bayonet base, used in tube power amplifiers to generate the output power and drive the loudspeaker through an output transformer. They are mainly used in audio high-end and hi-fi power amps (often single-ended, less often push-pull) where high voltage, high dissipation, and the characteristic operating behavior of a power triode are required.

Typical applications include high-quality Class A amplifiers (211 and 845) and Class A2 amplifiers (805 and 805A), in which the output tube strongly defines both the technical behavior and the audible result. For service and operation it is essential to understand that these tubes work at very high voltages (roughly 600 V to 1200 V), so correct design of the power supply, filament/heater supply, bias, and output transformer is mandatory. Are 211, 845 and 805 interchangeable?

What is the difference between 805 and 805A?

Because of the different anode connection and the mechanical/electrical implementation in the amplifier, the correct tube type must be chosen according to the device design and the specified socket/connection layout.

How do I choose the right power triode for hi-fi and service work?

The correct choice depends on the amplifier model and its operating design, and it is also influenced by practical constraints such as budget and mechanical clearance (some variants have a larger glass diameter). In this class of tubes, the amplifier’s transformer and power supply design are as decisive as the tube label.

Why is pair selection (matched pairs) important for 211/845/805?

Matched pairs are two tubes selected to closely match electrical parameters so that both channels operate equally. In many of these concepts—often single-ended designs with little or no global feedback—matched pairs are critical to achieve consistent channel balance and stable stereo imaging.
