JJ EL34 matched sextet – six selected power pentodes for big output stages
Six output tubes in one power stage demand more than six good tubes: only when all systems sit closely together do the parallel push-pull branches share current evenly and deliver the amp's full, clean output. That is exactly what this JJ EL34 sextet is selected for under the BTB premium matching program – as the complete set for 200-watt classics like the Hiwatt DR201 or the Peavey VB-2 bass head, and for large parallel push-pull designs up to Manley monoblocks.
The character stays typically JJ: on the warm, slightly soft side with an earthy, smooth foundation – and with six tubes, plenty of headroom and authority on top. After roughly 50 to 100 hours of burn-in, a fresh set has fully settled in.
Typical applications
- Full retube of 200-watt bass and guitar power stages running six EL34s
- Parallel push-pull (PPP) amplifiers with three tubes per branch

Application and design notes
Big output stages generate serious heat – ensure free airflow around the tubes and verify the power supply covers the 9 A total heater current. With fixed bias, check the idle current of all six tubes after installation; in parallel operation, tight matching keeps current sharing between the systems even. Lethal voltages are present – service work requires proper qualification.
Questions about selection and use
Is the sextet the right set for my 200-watt amp?
Yes, 200-watt power stages such as the Hiwatt DR201 or the Peavey VB-2 run six EL34s – this sextet retubes the whole amp in one go. Have the bias set afterwards so all six tubes run at the intended operating point.
Does the set of six suit parallel push-pull amplifiers?
Yes, in PPP stages with three tubes per branch, tight matching matters most because paralleled systems must share the current. A continuously selected set supports even distribution and thus the amp's full usable output.
What does a complete set offer over mixed tubes?
Yes, the difference is measurable: all six tubes come from one selection run, so they reach comparable clipping behavior and equal headroom. Mixed tubes of different ages limit the stage to its weakest link and load individual systems unevenly.
